Science Pub Focuses on Invasion of the American bullfrog

Oregon State University – Cascades continues its Science Pub offerings with a presentation by Tiffany Sacra Garcia, an associate professor in OSU’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. Garcia will present “Invasion of the American Bullfrog: Why do they like Oregon waters so much?” on Tuesday, September 16 in Father Luke’s Room at McMenamins in Bend.

In her presentation, Garcia will explore the invasion of the American bullfrog from Mississippi to Oregon and explain what biologists are discovering about its impact. American bullfrogs are one of the 100 worst invasive species in the world, contributing to the declines of native species, particularly other amphibians, and affecting the health of aquatic ecosystems, even in Oregon.

Garcia’s research focuses on freshwater habitats and amphibian and invertebrate systems. Her work encompasses a variety of biological disciplines including aquatic, behavioral and community ecology, invasion biology, conservation biology, and herpetology. Her research projects have included quantifying predator/prey dynamics, competition regimes, stressor defense strategies and microhabitat preference. Garcia received a bachelor’s degree from University of California, Davis and a Ph.D. in ecology, evolution and behavior from the University of Kentucky. She was a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow from 2003 to 2006.

Science Pubs take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Networking and food and beverage service begin at 5:30 p.m., and the presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. Science Pubs are free to community members, but reservations are required. Space is limited to 100 guests.
