HosPet Therapy Dogs Deliver Comfort, Affection & Companionship

Partners In Care’s volunteer program is a shining example of how compassion comes in many forms — and sometimes, on four paws. At the heart of this special initiative is a remarkable team of more than 200 volunteers who give their time to bring comfort, connection, and care to patients and families. Among them are dozens of certified hospice therapy dogs, whose presence offers warmth and reassurance during life’s most delicate moments. Affectionately known as HosPets, these dogs and their handlers are a cherished part of the Partners In Care community.

HosPets bring more than smiles — they offer a calming presence that can ease anxiety, reduce stress, and create moments of peace and joy in difficult times. Whether visiting patients in hospice care or supporting families and caregivers, each HosPet provides unconditional affection and a gentle reminder that no one is alone.

One of the most delightful aspects of the HosPet program is its diversity. These therapy dogs truly come in all shapes and sizes. There’s Chica, a tiny and affectionate Toy Poodle; Koia, a towering yet tender Great Dane; and Captain, a stylish Rottweiler/Doberman mix who sports sunglasses and a tie to be the best dressed in the room. Each HosPet brings a unique personality, creating meaningful and memorable connections with those they visit.

Behind every HosPet is a dedicated volunteer handler, forming a powerful partnership rooted in empathy and service. Notably, one of Partners In Care’s volunteers is also a certified therapy dog trainer, helping ensure every HosPet meets rigorous standards for temperament, training, and safety. This commitment supports a program that is both compassionate and highly professional, allowing it to continue growing while maintaining exceptional quality of care.

The impact of the HosPet program extends well beyond traditional care settings. These hospice therapy dogs are a valued presence throughout the community, offering comfort in a variety of environments. They have participated in youth grief summer camps like Camp Courage, where children navigating loss find solace in a dog’s quiet companionship. HosPets have also made appearances at student stress relief events at Oregon State University–Cascades, helping students unwind and recharge during demanding academic periods.

The HosPet program is just one example of the powerful role volunteers play in shaping compassionate care. Whether human or canine, each volunteer contributes to a mission centered on dignity, comfort, and connection. As Glenda Lantis, Partners In Care Volunteer Coordinator, shares, “Our volunteers, and their incredible HosPets, create meaningful moments of comfort and connection that truly brighten someone’s day.”

For those inspired to give back, Partners In Care welcomes new volunteers to join its caring community. New volunteer orientations are held three times a year, offering an opportunity to learn more and get involved.
