The American Red Cross will install free smoke alarms and provide fire safety education to Bend residents on Saturday, April 30.
Did you know that if a fire starts in your home, you may have only two minutes to escape? Home fires are the single greatest disaster threat to individuals and families throughout the country. Through the Home Fire Campaign, the American Red Cross and local partners are helping to reduce the risk of home fire by installing free smoke alarms in communities across Oregon and Southwest Washington.
On Saturday, April 30, between the hours of 9:30am and 3pm, the Red Cross in Bend will install new, free smoke alarms in homes that need them. Trained volunteers will begin installing free smoke alarms near the Bend Red Cross office, 815 SW Bond St. in the morning and will travel throughout Bend for installation appointments during the day. During appointments volunteers will be reviewing fire safety checklists with residents and providing information about creating a fire escape plan.
“We hope most Bend residents never experience a fire in their home, but if they do, we want to make sure they get out before it’s too late,” said Lisa Stroup, executive director of the Red Cross Cascades Region Central and Eastern Oregon Chapter. “Having working smoke alarms in homes can double a person’s chance of surviving a home fire. It’s a simple, free and potentially lifesaving step anyone can take to protect their home and family.”
