It’s always nice to discover companies in Central Oregon that have been successful in business for several decades. This year, D&S Hydraulics, — a remanufacturer and reseller of all makes and models of hydraulic components and equipment — will celebrate its 40-year anniversary. The company was established in 1978 by Doug Sawyer and is now run by his son, Jamie, with a full-time staff of 18 including Sawyer’s nephew.
D&S is a full-service remanufacturing facility, including machining, welding and fabrication, serving the construction, agricultural, logging and heavy industrial industries. Situated in the industrial area near 15th and Bear Creek, D&S has a long-standing reputation in its physical sales territories in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. D&S’s mission statement is simple and to the point: to provide an establishment and environment that supports, encourages and helps pursue a higher level of personal character and abilities, while excelling at customer service and providing superior products.
It is important for D&S to see the businesses they provide services and equipment, to have a purposeful and positive impact on our families and community, both now and for generations to come.
“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come because of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have,” says Sawyer. “Me as a business owner, [I] have learned to not fear change, but to embrace it and be excited for what is to come and the challenges to be successful through those changes. Change can be hard, but almost always has a positive outcome. The discipline is to keep looking back and see the good things that have happened through those events and difficult moments, which helps promote confidence in future changes,” he adds.
KEY MILESTONES
In 2012, D&S acquired Attachment Service Centers who had been a previous vendor for heavy equipment parts and whole goods. With that business acquisition, they are now their own product vendor for heavy equipment attachment parts and a wide range of whole goods. D&S in now combined with ASC to expand operations and capabilities for their customers. “We’ve continued to increase our web presence and marketing, resulting in sales that have grown exponentially, nationally and internationally.
In the coming months, D&S is looking to add on another 3,500 square feet to the ASC building for expanded inventory and work space. With the increase in space, there will be continued steady growth by adding larger machinery with increased capabilities. D&S expects to have the most diverse manual machining capabilities in Eastern Oregon next year with the purchase of another large lathe — a tool that rotates the work piece about an axis of rotation to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, deformation, facing and turning.
KEEPING IT LOCAL
Sawyer describes living and working in Central Oregon as, “A great place to raise a family. You can pick any direction and find completely diverse outdoor adventures and peace, rare to most living environments. Even though the town is growing, there is still a lot of support and outreach from local community at a personal and business level. You feel it’s easy to have a positive impact on community here if you put in the effort,” says Sawyer.
D&S works with several local nonprofits such as Giving Plate and Teen Challenge. They also sponsor local Christian concerts and events and sports programs at Bend and Mountain View High School.
