Filmmaker Q&A: Jenny Shi

Jiayan “Jenny” Shi is a Chicago-based documentary filmmaker and multimedia journalist. Last year, Shi won BendFilm Festival’s special jury award with your first feature-length documentary, Finding Yingying. We spoke with Shi about the process of creating Finding Yingying, the challenges of balancing objectivity and human interest in documentary work, as well as Shi’s inspirations and upcoming work.

Ema, a dancer, and her husband Gastón (Gael García Bernal), a choreographer 12 years her senior, have recently been relieved of their adopted son, Polo, after an arson incident that resulted in the horrific disfigurement of Ema’s sister. The questions of where Polo is now, whether or not Ema and Gastón “gave him back,” and who is to blame in this ugly situation roils the tension between the couple. (via LA Times)

SOLARIS (1972)
Ground control has been receiving mysterious transmissions from the three remaining residents of the Solaris space station. When cosmonaut and psychologist Kris Kelvin is dispatched to investigate, he experiences the same strange phenomena that afflict the Solaris crew, sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his consciousness.

The film follows a private investigator in Los Angeles who becomes embroiled in a complex mystery after picking up a female hitchhiker.

STAND BY ME (1986)
After learning that a stranger has been accidentally killed near their rural homes, four Oregon boys decide to go see the body. On the way, Gordie Lachance (Wil Wheaton), Vern Tessio (Jerry O’Connell), Chris Chambers (River Phoenix) and Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) encounter a mean junk man and a marsh full of leeches, as they also learn more about one another and their very different home lives. THE GREEN KNIGHT (2021)
The Green Knight is a 2021 American medieval fantasy film by David Lowery, starring Dev Patel. In a retelling of the 14th-century poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” Patel plays Gawain, a nephew of King Arthur, who sets out on a journey to test his courage and face the Green Knight.
