Census Report: 23% Deschutes County Firms Women Owned

Statistics published this week by the U.S. Census Bureau find that in 2002, the most recent data available, about 23 percent of all businesses in Deschutes County were owned by women.

Through 2005 of the 5,988 non-farm businesses in Deschutes County, only 1.2 percent, or about 72 firms, were owned by people of Hispanic or Latino origins, and 1.3 percent, or about 78 businesses, were owned by people of Asian decent.

From 2000 to 2005 private non-farm employment in Deschutes County increased 26.8 percent to 54,375 workers compared to a 4 percent increase to 1.4 million workers in all of Oregon.

In 2004, the median household income in Deschutes County was $45,894 compared to $42,568 in all of Oregon. In 1999, per capita money income in the county was $21,767. And in 2004, one out of every 10 people in Deschutes County lived below the poverty line.

Retail sales in Deschutes County for 2002 totaled $1.86 billion, according to the Census, with retail sales per capita reaching $14.8 million. Accomodation and food service sales during the same year in Bend totaled $130.7 million.

Incidentally, in 2006 there were 3,284 building permits issued in Deschutes County compared to 26,623 in all of Oregon — that number excludes Deschutes County.

In 2006, Deschutes County reported there were 8,054 people of Hispanic or Latino origin living here, or 5.4 percent of the county’s 149,140 residents, the largest minority group in Deschutes County, compared to 1 percent of people from Asian decent and .4 percent from African-American heritage.

Overall, Oregon’s Latino population increased from about 275,000 in 2000 to 370,000 in 2006, and Hispanic or Latino people now account 10.2 percent of the state’s 3.7 million residents, representing the largest minority group in the state, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Oregon’s population only increased from 3.4 million to 3.7 million during the same period, compared to 281.4 million to 299.4 million for the United States as a whole.
