Kayo’s Restaurant, a popular local eatery known for having peanuts on the tables and crushed shells on the floors, closed both its locations in Bend and Redmond this week, and one former employee said it was because business had slowed to a crawl on many nights.
The Oregon Secretary of State website lists one Calvin Oakley of 61435 Ward Road as the owner of “Peanuts R’ Us, LLC,” the legal name of Kayo’s Restaurant in Bend, and “K. Paul’s, L.L.C,” the restaurant’s legal name in Redmond. Calls to a phone number under Oakley’s name were not immediately returned.
Late Tuesday afternoon and early evening, potential customers of Kayo’s walked up to the restaurant, peered inside the windows and pulled on the locked doors. A sign on the front of Kayo’s notified people the restaurant was closed for business.
Kayo’s Restaurant employed about 87 people between its Bend and Redmond locations. The Bend and Redmond offices of the Department of Employment could not be reached to determine if Kayo’s Restaurant notified the state agency of the coming layoffs so the DOE could help those affected workers transition into positions with a new company.
