Kitchen Kaleidoscope Success
Our June Kitchen Kaleidoscope in Eagle Crest was a wonderful celebration of community, generosity, and creativity. Thanks to the dedication of event chair Margaret Chappell, an incredible team of volunteers and our generous sponsors, the event raised more than $28,000 to support Assistance League of Bend’s programs.
More than 420 volunteer hours were contributed on event day alone, in addition to countless hours of planning and preparation. The event also featured outstanding local restaurants, talented artisans and vendors, and a beautiful jewelry raffle made possible by generous community partners.
A special thank you to our homeowners, sponsors, vendors, volunteers, and attendees for making this event such a success. Your generosity helps ensure we can continue improving lives throughout our community.
Literacy Initiative:
Opening the Door to a Lifetime of Reading
A single book can spark curiosity, build confidence, and open the door to lifelong learning. That’s the goal of Assistance League of Bend’s Literacy Initiative, which provides new, age-appropriate books in both English and Spanish to underserved children throughout Deschutes County.
Children in kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to choose books that match their interests and reading level at community events, schools, and family programs. By giving children the opportunity to select books they’ll enjoy, the program helps strengthen reading skills while fostering a lifelong love of reading.
This past year, 1,530 new books found their way into the hands of 1,530 children through 14 book giveaway events stretching from Redmond to La Pine. From monthly events at The Giving Plate and family movie nights at the Tower Theatre to school celebrations, literacy festivals, and reading support programs, each event created an opportunity to inspire young readers.
The impact is felt throughout the community. Families tell us they check The Giving Plate’s calendar to see when our volunteers will be there, educators have shared how excited students are to receive books of their own, and schools continue to invite us back because they see the difference these events make.
Thank you to our donors and volunteers for helping put books into the hands of children across Central Oregon. Together, you’re helping build stronger readers, brighter futures and a lifelong love of learning—one book at a time.
