Bend Cultural Tourism Commission Grant Application Review

The Bend Cultural Tourism Commission announce they will review grant applications for the 2016 grant cycle. The Commission expects to award about $150,000 in 2016. Public Meeting June 10.

Commissioners will review the applications throughout May and then convene for panel deliberation in a public meeting, scheduled for June 10 beginning at 9:15 am. The order of the day will include BCTF business as well as the application review. Applicants may be asked clarifying questions regarding the application during this meeting, but will not make presentations. We expect to adjourn no later than 3 pm.

The meeting will be held at The Environmental Center, Audubon Room, 16 NW Kansas, Bend.

Following is a list of the grant applications in the order they will be reviewed and a brief summary of the proposal.

Atelier 6000 Grant Request $21,066
A6 will present a major art exhibit, “Opening Japan: Three Centuries of Woodblock Prints,” this fall. These works of art present a varied view of Japanese culture and also capture the creative and social shift that occurred when Japan opened its doors to the West in the 1850s.

BendFilm, Inc. Grant Request $40,000
BendFilm will host its 13th consecutive film festival, showcasing up to 90 independent narrative and documentary films. Throughout the four-day festival, visiting filmmakers and jurors will also participate in public education panels.

High Desert Mural Festival Grant Request $35,000
The High Desert Mural Festival is a local organization working to enhance the public arts culture of Central Oregon. The High Desert Mural Festival’s inaugural event will held in Bend during the 1st week of October 2016. The public will be able to view the mural process and interact with the artists as they create large scale murals throughout Bend.

High Desert Museum Grant Request $40,000
The High Desert Museum will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War II with a project, ‘World War II High Desert Homefront’, examining the High Desert region’s significance to the war effort—and the war’s lasting effects on the region. An immersive exhibit and programs will connect visitors to the wartime experiences of different groups in the region. This project will be designed to have broad appeal—vividly depicting historic events and how they shaped the cultural values and beliefs held in the U.S. today.

OperaBend Grant Request $10,000
OperatBend will produce Giacomo Puccini’s opera “La boheme” in Central Oregon, in collaboration with the local orchestra in March, 2017. These will be the first performances of a Puccini opera in Bend, accompanied by a full orchestra, conducted by Maestro Michael Gesme.

ScaleHouse Grant Request $25,000
BEND DESIGN CONFERENCE 2016 is a series of conversations, workshops, exhibits, and tours by and for creative innovators everywhere. This is not a conference just for designers—it’s also for entrepreneurs, educators, civic leaders, students, trade professionals and all of us curious about how we can apply creative problem solving to better connect people to ideas and each other. BEND DESIGN CONFERENCE will kick-off on Thursday, October 20 at the Tower Theatre with 10-12 speakers.

Sled Film Grant Request $10,000
Sledfilm is an annual backcountry snowmobile/snow bike film festival and awards show, the largest in the winter motorsports industry. It is held at the Tower Theatre in Bend over two nights each November. The event regularly sells out each night, or very close to it. Between attendees, volunteers and a large group of visiting professional athletes, sledfilm attracts approximately 1,000 attendees over the two nights.

Sunriver Music Festival Grant Request $14,250
The Sunriver Music Festival is presenting the Steinway Artist Showcase on March 24-25, 2017 at the Tower Theatre in downtown Bend. The showcase will feature nationally-acclaimed Steinway pianists Claire Wachter, Dean Kramer, Randy Porter, and other Steinway Artists performing on multiple Steinway pianos over two days of solo and ensemble performances, multimedia events, masterclasses, and workshops. Stylistically, both classical and jazz genres will be performed with strong emphasis on the variety of virtuosity this instrument provides.

Tower Theatre Foundation Grant Request $43,500
Building on the success of the 2016 Bend A Cappella Festival, the Tower Foundation will build a more cohesive programming and marketing approach for the mid winter and spring months. Building on a new regional strategy, we will work with other presentrs to attract high quality artists on NW routing tours. To fully promote this opportunity, the Tower will produce a second season brochure in January 2017.

World Muse Grant Request $20,000
Muse Conference connects attendees from near and far with locally and internationally recognized artists, activists, & social change leaders to celebrate International Women’s Day and kickoff Women’s History Month. Our fifth annual event is scheduled for March 3-5, 2017 and is open to all and includes panel discussions, art exhibits, live performances, interviews, keynotes, workshops, and special events.

The ten grant requests total $258, 816.

ABOUT THE BEND CULTURAL TOURISM FUND: The purpose of the Bend Cultural Tourism Fund is to enhance the local economy through the promotion and cultivation of Bend’s cultural tourism programs. The awarded grant funds will be used to: help attract cultural tourists during the shoulder seasons and winter months, when cultural tourism organizations are most active; diversify Bend’s tourism offerings; and build on efforts to establish Bend as a premier year-round cultural tourism destination.
