A coalition of local educators joins Stand for Children in endorsing Knute Buehler for State Representative

At an appearance this week before the Rotary Club of Greater Bend, State Representative candidate Knute Buehler (R-HD54/Bend) announced a seven-point plan for improving education.

“Bend has some of the best schools in Oregon. Our job is to make them even better – world class. This plan is designed to ensure Bend has the schools we expect and Oregon has the schools we need to prepare our kids for college, work and the world,” said Buehler.

Buehler says his plan is based on what he has learned listening to local educators and touring local schools, his experience as a parent and the knowledge he has gained serving on the budget committee of the Bend-La Pine School District and the boards of OSU-Cascades and The Ford Family Foundation.

Buehler also announced that he has been endorsed by a coalition of 15 local educators, including a majority of the Bend-La Pine School Board, former Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Doug Nelson, former University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer and Stand for Children, one of Oregon’s leading, nonpartisan school reform and advocacy organizations.

Key components of Buehler’s education plan include:

Fund schools first – not last – in state budget
New investments to ensure 3rd grade reading proficiency
More classroom time and smaller classes in early grades
Better benchmarks to measure learning and reward good teachers
Unite high schools and tech sector to prepare kids for economy of tomorrow
Ensure local access and affordability for quality higher education at COCC and OSU-Cascades
Support families so kids come to school ready to learn

Buehler currently serves on the budget committee for the Bend-La Pine School District and on the boards of Oregon State University Foundation and The Ford Family Foundation, which is a significant supporter of the Chalkboard project and provides college scholarships to Oregonians.  He was also on the advisory board for OSU-Cascades from 1999-2004.
