Central Oregon Pediatric Associates Offers Great Conversations for Pre-Teens

Central Oregon Pediatric Associates (COPA) is now taking reservations for the popular puberty classes, called Great Conversations facilitated by Dr. Rob Lehman and Julie Metzger, RN, MN. These classes are geared for pre-teens, age 10 – 12, plus their parents with one class for boys and one for girls.

This is the fifth year that COPA has hosted this event in Bend, due to the many requests from parents. The workshop is filled with both hilarity and the facts about kids growing up. The interactive workshop opens up conversations between parents and their children surrounding issues related to puberty and beyond, while the bonds created in these classes will last a lifetime. Classes have filled up every year, so interested parents should sign up early.

EVENT: Great Conversations workshop and event on the subject of puberty.
FACILITATORS: Dr. Rob Lehman will lead the boys’ class and Julie Metzger, RN, MN will lead the girls in an interactive discussion about puberty, with anecdotes, graphics, diagrams and facts about the changes a child undergoes to becoming an adult. Be prepared to engage with your child and come away better informed and well prepared for the next few years of your child’s life.
DATE/TIME: Sunday, April 9, 2017 1 – 5:30 pm, including several breaks with hosted beverages and a light snack.
LOCATION: The Riverhouse Convention Center, 3075 N. Business 97 in Bend, OR
COST: Tickets cost $65 per parent/child pair; plus $45 for each additional same-gender child in the same class with the parent. Each participating child will receive the speaker’s book “Will Puberty Last My Whole Life?”. Scholarship funds are available upon request to the speakers.

Facilitators
Dr. Rob Lehman is a pediatrician who has found his passion by pursuing additional fellowship training in Adolescent Medicine. He works to promote healthcare for teens as a teacher, clinician and policy developer. Previously, Dr. Lehman has practiced at teen clinics, public health clinics, homeless teen clinics, worked with college youth, incarcerated youth, special projects with disabled youth and other specialty care for children. At present, Dr. Lehman teaches classes targeted toward adolescents and families regarding medical, social and sexual health. He also works on health policy at state and national levels.

Julie Metzger, RN, MN began her nursing career at Seattle Children’s Hospital in 1981, caring for hospitalized teens and their families in the adolescent unit. The experience of working with teens who managed their lives with resilience and strength solidified her passion for adolescents and their families. Julie has been invited to numerous school and community groups to talk to parents about topics related to adolescence. Her encouraging, straightforward approach, matched with the latest research and strategies, have made her a popular presenter.
