The City of Redmond reports that the Sam Johnson Park Playground Improvement Project, the largest accessible and inclusive playground in the Northwest, is well underway. Designed and funded through a grassroots community effort, this amazing park will accommodate 450 kids (both young and old) with a wonderful outside park experience, which includes a climbing wall, swings, slides and zip line.
“Our desire is to have a park that the whole community can access and enjoy while accommodating many participants at the same time,” said Heather Richards, Community Development Director.
In keeping with the grassroots effort behind this public facility, the City of Redmond is hosting a Community Build Week, August 19 through 23, utilizing community volunteers to build the playground structure, which includes over 70 different playground events. There will be two shifts a day (8am – 12pm and 1–5pm) comprised of 20 – 30 volunteers for each shift.
“This is a way for the community to participate in building this playground, and for the city to save over $60,000 in labor,” explained Mayor George Endicott. “We have achieved great things in Redmond through volunteer efforts. In true Redmond style, we will work together to make this project happen for our community.”
Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to participate and be prepared for an active work day.
