On April 29, Noon, in Bend, hundreds of thousands of people will join a massive nonviolent action starting in Washington DC and supported by sister marches across the country. From the Environmental Protection Agency tear down to the appointment of big oil polluters to cabinet posts, and loosening of protections for our clean air and water, we’re all at risk says Diane Hodiak of the Peoples Climate March:350 Deschutes.
“Climate Change and our over dependence on dirty fossil fuels threatens all of us,” says Hodiak. “Our rights to a healthy climate are now being dismantled to favor polluters while scientists are being undermined with fake facts. In just 100 days, polluters and their allies have been given free rein to destroy our environment, health and our economy. We all deserve a healthy climate rather than paying for pollution that is hurting everyone. We know the way forward to protect our quality of life and all future generations. Clean energy is our future as we act on climate and create good paying jobs and climate justice for everyone, including those who must make a just transition away from dirty fossil fuels.”
You can unite with others in solidarity on Saturday, April 29 to renew a commitment made in 2014, that to Change Everything we need Everyone. “Let’s rally support for Climate Action at all levels,” offers Hodiak. “Inspire our leaders and our community. Saving our planet, our forests and our rivers, requires everyone. Let’s put forward our vision of climate justice for all, not just a special few. Clean Energy jobs and a just transition to a low carbon economy is the right path forward to prosperity. Join together in this solidarity event with the rest of our nation on April 29. Bring family and friends.”
Marchers will proceed through downtown Bend and end at the Bend Education Center, across from the downtown library, where activities will be held. Youth may sign and decorate an art mural. Everyone may watch and join street theatre, chant, and listen to music by Chiringa. Speakers include City Councilor Dr. Nathan Boddie, Carina Miller of the Warm Springs Tribal Council, Elemental Energy, and more. People are asked to RSVP at http://350deschutes.org, click on EVENTS. Bring family and friends to join this important event.
A mini climate fair will offer opportunities to get involved and be a part of the movement, whether that’s volunteering, taking action, or helping to support the community goals of the Bend Climate Resolution. We’ve made an important first step, and now we need to do our share and join hundreds of cities that are also acting to protect quality of life for everyone, including future generations. Like Oregon, Bend will benefit from climate actions, benefitting from the economic opportunities, while leading by example so that others may follow.
SAFETY Notice: Marchers are requested to walk, bike, carpool, and park in a parking lot or off street if possible. For safely, marchers should stay on city sidewalks and obey crossing guards, as well as all traffic signals.
