Deschutes County Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee Seeks Members

The Deschutes County Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) seeks applicants to fill two at-large positions. Composed of 13 voting members, BPAC’s mission is to promote and encourage safe bicycling and walking as a significant means of transportation in Deschutes County. The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners will approve applicants to the two positions.

Members of the BPAC committee seek volunteer candidates from Deschutes County to fill the positions. Candidates with a background and/or interest in cycling and pedestrian issues are encouraged to apply. A majority of the monthly meetings take place in Bend from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. Voting members are asked to serve a three-year term.

Committee goals include the development of a coordinated system of safe and convenient bikeways and walkways, stimulating public awareness of bicycling and pedestrian issues, and examining current and future financing options and budget strategies for bicycle and pedestrian projects.

Other than the 13 volunteer members, meetings are often attended by staff from cities of Bend, La Pine, Redmond, and Sisters, Deschutes County, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).

BPAC advises Deschutes County and local jurisdictions in bicycle and pedestrian transportation matters pertaining to existing and proposed road construction and signing. The Committee is a source of current information relating to the use of bicycling and walking and strives to support them as a viable means of transportation in Deschutes County.

Please apply by 5pm on Friday, October 17. The Board application process will remain open until filled. The Board hopes to appoint the new Committee member in November.
