Central Oregon Community College’s (COCC) annual High School Math Contest, a game-based learning tradition since 1978, is being held on the Bend campus from 9am to 3:30pm on Thursday, April 25.

Approximately 180 high school students from 14 schools across Central Oregon — from Gilchrist to Mitchell to Madras — will traverse the college’s campus as they compete in five math-focused challenges, including a relay race, scavenger hunt and a name-that-tune-styled game.

“Each year, we can’t wait to share our love of math and inspire high school students toward further study,” said Jacquie Coe, department chair and associate math professor. “This year’s theme is ‘Forensic Math,’ to highlight an area where math is used, from Newton’s law of cooling to fingerprint analyzing to logical deduction.”

The event, sponsored by Lonza Pharma and Biotech, concludes with an awards presentation. All students must be preregistered. For more information on the event, contact Wendy Duarte at wduarte@cocc.edu or 541-383-7289.

In advance of college events, persons needing accommodation or transportation because of a physical or mobility disability should contact Caitlyn Gardner at 541-383-7237. For accommodation because of other disability, such as hearing impairment, contact disability services at 541-383-7583.
