“We signaled the grand opening of HIIT Logic by staging a free community workout that attracted 50 people, and it felt amazing to see how our months of hard work paid off,” said Jarred Montgomery, co-owner of the fitness facility with his wife Sierra. “Even Mayor Jeannine Earls has stopped by to welcome us to La Pine.”
As he explained, HIIT Logic defies the stereotypes of working out at a traditional gym — with its bulky, muscle-bound men flexing their muscles while lifting impossibly heavy weights, surrounded by walls of intimidating equipment.
Combining short bursts of intense exercise with brief rest periods to maximize calorie burn, build muscle, and boost metabolism efficiently, HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) workouts — an exercise approach that Montgomery calls “functional fitness” — prepare your body for everyday movements that get carried over into real life, rather than isolating individual muscles, he said.
“By mimicking tasks like lifting, squatting, and carrying, the training improves joint mobility, core strength, and balance, which ultimately helps prevent injuries and makes daily activities significantly easier.”
Dispelling the assumption that HIIT Logic is aimed only at people who are exercise veterans, Montgomery explained that “Before a new member works out for the first time, we determine their degree of fitness and discuss any ailments or restrictions. All movements in class can be modified, as demonstrated by the coaches beforehand, to accommodate every age and degree of experience. We hit every skill level, and the overall environment is very supportive — giving each other high fives included.”
Introduced to HIIT Logic after moving to Central Oregon (where locally-owned-and-operated HIIT Logic gyms are located in Tumalo, Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Sisters, and now La Pine), the couple felt an immediate fit with their own personal and professional goals.
“We had a small group of friends where we previously lived who regularly worked out together,” Jarred said. “Our shared exertions created such a strong bond that we wanted to bring that same sense of community and fitness to La Pine.”
“Finding an available commercial location within our price range proved to be a huge challenge,” Montgomery said, “and nine months elapsed between deciding to establish a fitness studio and finally opening our doors.”
One month was spent fully remodeling the interior space that had previously been occupied by a vintage home décor and gift store. He elaborated: “I took out three walls, added a new wall and a water bottle fill station, renovated two bathrooms, pulled out all the flooring (except the industrial carpeting), and replaced it with 1,600 square feet of new rubber mat gym flooring. Finally, we added a physical therapy space for Sierra’s practice.”
Montgomery admitted that “I was still working on the building the night before our March 9 grand opening!”
He emphasized that an integral part of HIIT Logic will continue to be the coaches, “all of whom are trained not only on specific workouts and how to modify them to accommodate differing fitness levels, but also on qualities such as kindness and being supportive — which is a big thing for us. Good, positive energy is as much of a qualification as movement quality and coaching ability, and we encourage new coaches to ‘have fun and be yourself, then everyone else will follow.’”
Another “huge core value of HIIT Logic,” Montgomery said, “is having kids see their parents involved in physical activity and doing hard things — which carries over into their family role modeling and life in general. We encourage this by having a designated area for kids within the larger workout space, and also recently started offering Kids HIIT Logic classes.”
After an initial flurry of advertising through social media, and mass distribution of flyers and business cards throughout La Pine before HIIT Logic opened, “our best method of promoting HIIT Logic has become members telling their friends — we’ve already built a community within the La Pine community,” Montgomery said. “Sierra and I feel full of gratitude.”
