The size of the American auto mechanics sector is huge – and it has a revenue of almost $70 billion US dollar per year. But many of these businesses operate from the usual sorts of premises you might associate with car mechanics – and they’re not usually within the owner’s own home. If you need to work from home, perhaps for childcare or cost reasons, you may be a little put off going down the mechanics route. After all: nobody wants to find car oil or cleaning fluid all over their kitchen table! But with a little preparation, it’s possible to run a mechanics business like this from home without having to worry about mess.
The benefits of a garage
Perhaps the most obvious place to site your burgeoning mechanics business, then, is in a garage. The average American garage measures nine feet or so wide per car it can take – meaning that you should have enough room to keep all of your basic tools, such as diagnostic kits, to hand. The somewhat cramped environment, though, will mean that any spills or stains will seem magnified. A garage parking mat which can be hosed down is a good first step towards preventing long-term damage to your garage floor. Another good idea is to install lots of shelving in a designated corner of the garage, so that the temptation to leave bottles and canisters lying around is removed.
Indoor mechanics
There are all sorts of possible reasons, however, why you might not have access to a garage. Whether it’s due to space reasons or simply an oversupply of family cars, there are many reasons why the above plans could be out of the question. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dreams of running a mechanics business from home.
Instead, an indoor workshop might be the answer. The downside to this route is that one of the most popular sub-sectors in the mechanics field, car repair, is out of the question. But you might be able to work on specific bits of cars, such as wheels or even engines. Remember to ensure that this room is out of bounds to any children you might have around: you’ll need to be able to keep it somewhat unclean in order to have everything to hand, and the last thing you want is an accident involving a bottle of fluid or oil.
Best practice for cleaning
No matter where in your home you site your new mechanics business, it’s likely that you’ll have to give your work surfaces a good clean from time to time. A great tip for cleaning oil off clothes and fabrics, for example, is to wash it by hand then add a vinegar rinse. And if you need to clean car paint from a glass car window, why not use a razor blade for targeted and precise removal?
Becoming one of the eight million or so Americans who work from home doesn’t have to be a pipe dream. This applies even if you’re in an industry which doesn’t obviously cater for people with your skill set, such as car mechanics. By learning how to clean up specific substances and employing useful storage solutions, it’s more than possible to ensure that your from-home car mechanics business takes off.
