Three local traded-sector companies (companies that sell goods or services outside the local area and expand its economic base) were honored as local success stories featured at La Pine/Sunriver Inaugural Luncheon held at Crosswater Golf Club on June 7 to a sold-out crowd.

We are in the midst of celebrating many milestones this year– nationally, regionally and locally throughout Central Oregon. Deschutes County is celebrating its 100th year, La Pine celebrating ten years as a city and 40 years of Frontier Days/Independence Day parade and festival, Sunriver Chamber of Commerce celebrating 29 years of existence, Newberry National Volcanic Monument’s 25th year and La Pine/Sunriver’s Economic Development Program’s (LED of Economic Development of Central Oregon) inaugural annual luncheon highlighting the progress made in the past year in South Deschutes County area.

The mileposts of achievements this past year, according to Janet Burton, EDCO area economic development manager include:
• A branding and marketing initiative that City of La Pine is currently working on with Mandala.
• Recent news that Travel Oregon has selected Newberry Country for an accelerated Rural Tourism Studio.
• Stellar years for both Sunriver Brewing Company and Sunriver Resort.
• The recent opening of a new building for Mid Oregon Credit Union in La Pine.
• Grocery Outlet and Dollar Tree’s plans to open a new 27,000 square foot site at the corner of Highway 97 and Finley Butte Road.
• Plans for a Travel Plaza at the current site of Gordy’s Truck Stop, which has recently been purchased by new owners.
• The new St. Charles Family Care Center (planned for fall 2017).
• The ongoing development of the Deschutes County Rural Enterprise Zone to include the Sunriver Business Park and Spring River Plaza along with the City of La Pine and Bend Airport and La Pine’s Newberry Business Park and Finley Butte Industrial Parks.

Three local traded-sector companies (companies that sell goods or services outside the local area and expand its economic base) were honored as local success stories featured at the La Pine/Sunriver Inaugural Luncheon held at Crosswater Golf Club on June 7 to a sold-out crowd. Those companies are Quicksilver Contracting Company, an integrated wood products company, who has had a sizeable expansion to its production and hired eleven new employees this year; Cascade Wellness Technologies, Inc., a start-up medical device company and Sunriver Brewing Company, who recently won a gold medal at the World Beer Cup for its Fuzztail Hefeweizen.

Sunriver Brewing Company
Recently appointed to the La Pine/Sunriver Economic Development Advisory Board, Ryan Duley who is the director of sales and marketing for Sunriver Brewing Company, reports an increased popularity of their beers and a growing number of patrons at their pubs in both Bend and Sunriver.

“With the aggressive growth pattern we do find ourselves in need of employees for both the brewery and pubs often,” explains Duley. “As a company we look to find quality employees that adhere to our high standards and culture. Both the Sunriver Chamber of Commerce and EDCO have been working hard to help us with our growth by making Sunriver and La Pine more attractive for people to live and work. There are many reasons for people to come live and work in South Deschutes County and we hope that Sunriver Brewing Company is one of them.”

The company has added a base of its operations in one of South County’s greatest assets — its 300 acre Industrial and Business Park with sewer, water and power already curbside. The park boasts the lowest land costs in Deschutes County as well as the lowest system development charges in Central Oregon.

Cascade Wellness Technologies (CWT)
CWT, located in Sunriver, is a medical device manufacturer, producing holistic, non-invasive healing methods as an alternative to pharma and surgical procedures. The flagship project is a device which has automated the application of hot and cold to the body in a targeted area in any fashion desired. Through the selections on a touch screen interface, you can select the duration and temperature of hot and cold, input the number of cycles you wish to apply and you are set. The unit is completely self-contained and can run for hours if desired.

“For years we have all been aware of the power of hot and cold therapies. Now full control is available in a simple to use format,” said David Schaefer, president/chief executive officer. The results that have been reported using this new patented technology have been extremely positive with this device in clinical trials with Colorado State University in their Sport Equine Department. Another undisclosed university will start series of trials on horses as well as human athletes. The initial market launch will be in collegiate and professional athletics as well as the equine world in the next few months.

“We are very excited to bring this effective alternative to the masses and provide a healing method that has not been realistic until now,” says Schaefer. “We are very proud to have our business based here in the Sunriver area. The amount of support and enthusiasm that this community has offered us has been incredible. We would like to thank this community along with the Sunriver Chamber of Commerce and EDCO/LED for all the assistance in this endeavor.”

The Deschutes County Rural Enterprise Zone and its related incentives and focused efforts on LED/EDCO and the Sunriver Chamber of Commerce appear to be spurring interest in the Sunriver Business Park business opportunities. At the time of publication, two sales of contiguous commercial lots with a combined total of 5.2 acres were sold in mid-April for $200,000 and $240,000 and a sale is pending for the other 4.9 commercial lot. Plans for these lots have not yet been disclosed.

Two commercial lots in the Business Park are actively still on MLS. Investor/developer and/or owners/users.
