My Story of Fighting Addiction

My addiction to prescription medicines started more than two years ago with depression and anxiety developed after bad flu. The CNS depressants I was taking were giving me a sense of control and turned into a habit. My consumption increased with time. I noticed it was starting to become a problem but did not know how to deal with it.

Discovering the Possibility of Professional Help

Occasionally, I read about rehab in Nottingham helping a person deal with his drinking problems and made a decision to contact Serenity Addiction Center to check what they have to offer in my case. It took me a while to actually make a call. I was expecting the treatment in rehab to be expensive and did not really want to admit I needed it. It was the possibility I was considering.

One day, I decided to take an option of a discovery tour to rehab and went to visit the rehab in Glasgow next to where I live. I had my prejudice about the place, but to my surprise, I have discovered a hotel-quality facility and had a long chat with a volunteer there.

Choosing between Onboarding and Outboarding

During my visit, I found out that the center offers an option of doing a detox at home with regular visits of the rehab’s nurse. In my case with some medical issues I had, I was advised to book a two-week stay in the center under the close supervision of healthcare experts.

Dealing with Withdrawal

To stop taking medicines was complicated and hurtful. The world turned into a bleak hostile place, and I am glad I was not on my own when doing it. I felt safe at Serenity. I had sleeping problems and headaches. Some medication was offered to reduce the symptoms, and gradually, I started feeling better physically.

Sorting Myself out

Dealing with my addictive tendencies through therapy came next. I also did some yoga and meditation to relax mentally and physically. Taking part in a couple of group sessions, I was surprised by the supportive and friendly atmosphere there. I took some comfort in the fact that we all were there dealing with our problems, and no patient behaved superior to others. The addictions were ranging from alcohol and drugs to compulsive gambling and shopping.

When my stay was coming to an end, I carried on with one-to-one therapy and visited Serenity rehab occasionally. I am on an aftercare program now and am planning to volunteer as a mentor since I want to help others start their journey to a better addiction-free life.
