Don’t know what to do with that old paint, brake fluid, or garden fertilizer in your garage? Residents in Sisters, La Pine, and Redmond will have the chance to dispose of household hazardous waste safely at no cost. Deschutes County Solid Waste will be holding Neighborhood Household Hazardous Waste Collection events at the following locations:
Sisters: Saturday, August 6, 9am–3pm. Sisters High School, 1700 McKinney Butte Road—across the street from Sisters High School Campus in parking lot west of Reed Field.
La Pine: Saturday, August 13, 9am–3pm. La Pine High School, 51633 Coach Road—front parking lot.
Redmond: Saturday, August 20, 9am–3pm. Deschutes County Fair and Expo Center, 3800 SW Airport Way—main parking lot.
Here are some of the hazardous materials that will be accepted at the collection events:
Oil and latex paints and stains
Thinners, solvents, fuels
Oil soaked rags and absorbents
Pool and spa chemicals
Garden products such as herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers
Vehicle fluids such as coolants, lubricants, fuels, brake fluid, and transmission fluid
Propane tanks and cylinders
Aerosols such as paints and garden sprays
Products with Mercury such as thermometers and thermostats
Fluorescent tubes and bulbs
Rechargeable batteries
Household cleaners
These are the hazardous materials that will not be accepted at the collection events:
Business Hazardous Waste
Medical waste
Explosives, fireworks, ammunition
Compressed gas cylinders (propane tanks and cylinders will be accepted)
Barrels
If you can’t make it to the event near you, household hazardous waste is accepted at the Hazardous Waste Facility located at the Knott Landfill on certain dates at no cost. Hazardous waste generated from business registered with the Knott Landfill Hazardous Waste Facility operator is also accepted at the Knott Landfill facility.
