Central Oregon Kung Fu teaches practical self defense through strength, honor and discipline. Sifu Ralph Ferguson is the owner and head instructor of Central Oregon Kung Fu with over 38 years of martial arts experience teaching ages 8 to 108. Sifu Ferguson was a top contender in fighting and forms in the early 70s, 80s and thru the mid 90s. He has held women’s rape prevention courses throughout Portland and the Portland metro area and worked with the Beaverton Police Department. He teaches a traditional Kung Fu with an emphasis of modern application called Wun Hop Kuen Do.

Wun Hop Kuen Do is a Chinese mixed martial art that combines Western Boxing, Judo, Jujitsu, Kenpo Karate, Eskrima, Tang Soo do and Kung Fu. It was founded in 1947 in Oahu, Hawaii. Wun Hop Kuen Do means “combination fist art style” and techniques identify with, and are based on, the Kajukenbo system. This martial arts style incorporates techniques from many different styles including Northern and Southern Kung Fu systems and Escrima. Practitioners of the style are always striving to improve it by the incorporation and improvement of useful methods or techniques.  The idea leads to self defense that is creative and allows one to think about what is the best response.

Instruction is based around a set of requirements: blocks, strikes, holds, locks, throws, combinations, setups, history, and fighting principles that are contained in a red binder affectionately referred to as the Redbook. The Redbook contains the list of requirements needed for each rank in the system and a place where the instructor may “sign off” the technique–a form of evaluation used to determine whether the technique is performed by the student at a level suitable for testing. When all the requirements of a given rank are signed off, the student may test for the next belt.

Students of Central Oregon Kung Fu develop excellent body conditioning, power, balance and fluidity of movement. Training at hand to hand includes the study of basic techniques, traditional forms, fighting strategy, practical self defense, and weapons practice. This training is conducted in a supportive environment, where personal integration of the physical, spiritual, and mental aspects of the art is emphasized. Ancient and modern training methods are combined towards reaching the goals of integration of mind, body and spirit and practical self defense preparation.

Kung Fu is a Chinese term often used in the West referring to one’s expertise in any skill achieved through hard work and practice, not necessarily martial. At Central Oregon Kung Fu you will earn your rankings through hard work and practice.

The studio is located in downtown Redmond at 349 SW Sixth Street.  Adult classes are held every Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 7-8pm and children’s classes are held on the same days at 5:30-6:30pm.
