The Museum is offering a road-show style appraisal fair on Saturday, September 10. For a $5 donation, visitors can have two items verbally appraised by a team of local appraisers who can answer questions about possible values and identification.
Appraisals are available from 10am to 2pm. Museum staff will be on hand at workstations to offer advice on caring for your family heirlooms and photographs. If you have questions about cleaning, storing, displaying, or repairing antiques and heirlooms, staff can offer practical everyday solutions and provide access to additional resources.
Please note, appraisals are verbal estimates only and are not a guarantee of sale and cannot be used for insurance purposes. The Antique Appraisal Fair is also the opening of the Des Chutes Historical Museum’s new exhibit of hooked rugs from the High Desert Rug Hookers. Twenty-one pieces by the group will be on display from September through January 1.
Hooked rug making is a traditional folk art dating back to the mid-1800s when women would repurpose spun wool, rags, and used clothing torn into strips and looped through used burlap sacks to create beautiful yet functional rugs. The exhibit also includes antique rug making tools. The High Desert Rug Hookers guild keeps this traditional craft alive and well in Central Oregon.
Those interested in learning more about rug hooking can join the guild every Tuesday from 10am to 2pm at the Bend Senior Center. Joining the High Desert Rug Hookers is only $15 per year, and members offer coaching and mentoring to those just getting started.
