A beloved Bend Thanksgiving tradition returns next week when 88.9 KPOV rebroadcasts Arlo Guthrie’s live concert originally performed at Bend High School in 2008 as a benefit for KPOV.
KPOV will air the complete concert twice on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 24, from 9am to noon, and again from 6pm to 9pm. The broadcast will include reminiscences by Bend residents who attended the concert and commentary by KPOV volunteers.
KPOV has rebroadcast the concert each Thanksgiving since 2008. Although Guthrie’s live Bend concert was in April of that year, Thanksgiving is an appropriate time for the rebroadcast because his most famous song, “Alice’s Restaurant” – which he performed in the Bend concert – tells the (more or less) true story of a memorable Thanksgiving Day back in 1965.
The son of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie, Arlo built his own reputation as a live and recording artist around original songs such as “The Motorcycle Song,” “Highway in the Wind,” “Coming into Los Angeles” and “Darkest Hour,” as well as renditions of songs like Steve Goodman’s “City of New Orleans,” the traditional “St. James Infirmary,” Pete Seeger’s “If I Had a Hammer,” and many of his father’s songs — notably “This Land is Your Land.”
Broadcasting at 88.9 FM, KPOV is a listener-supported, volunteer-powered community radio station offering 40 locally produced programs of music and talk not available on other commercial and public radio stations in the area. KPOV also streams live at kpov.org, where listeners also can listen to archived programs.
Underwriting is available at KPOV and is affordable for nonprofit organizations and small local businesses. For a program schedule, underwriting information, to donate or to volunteer, call 541-322-0863, visit kpov.org or visit the studio at 501 NW Bond St., Bend, OR, 97701.
