Newport Ave. Market will host a 70’s retro party all-day December 1 in celebration of Owner, Rudy Dory’s, 35th anniversary in the grocery business and for creating a unique grocery shopping experience for Central Oregon locals. The party is open to the public and will boast BIG giveaways, including thirty-five $100 FoodeFlash Card awards, drawings throughout the day for bags of groceries, in-store specials and a lively, storewide party.

At the top of Rudy’s accomplishments is serving locals with the introduction and evolution of Newport Ave Market. For nearly two decades, Newport Avenue Market has grown in response to the ever evolving needs of local shoppers, resulting in more than just a grocery store – it’s a local experience! The store is finely tuned to the appetites of customers, filled to the brim with an eclectic selection of unique specialty foods, organic produce, an extraordinary wine and beer selection, as well as a renowned deli bursting with grab-and-go lunch items, coupled with everyday market essentials.

Most of all, it has become recognized for its superior customer service and reputation for keeping the shelves stocked. “We started asking customers about what they wanted, and we found out they wanted specialty foods, organic items, things your standard meat-and-potatoes grocery store didn’t handle.” – 1993, Rudy Dory, owner and founder of Newport Avenue Market.

Rudy grew up helping his parents with their family-owned grocery store in California, it only seems natural he took the path leading into the conception of Newport Ave. Market. After joining the U.S. Navy and spending time in Vietnam, he returned to the grocery business.

Prior to opening Newport Ave. Market, Rudy and his business partner opened nine grocery stores in Grants Pass, Eugene, LaPine, and Bend; one of which was the Food Value Store, which they renovated and re-opened as Newport Ave. Market in 1993. Rudy’s vision has always been to create a unique shopping experience for customers, as well as implementing cutting edge technologies to help customers easily navigate through their grocery-shopping endeavors. In 1980, he was the first grocer to install electronic cash registers; in 1982, he was the first independent grocer to accept MasterCard; in 1987, he installed electronic cash register scanners; in 2006, he installed U Scans; and in 2009, the FoodeFlash Card program was implemented at Newport Ave. Market.

Rudy’s biggest commitment has been to the community – raising over $200,000 for the Hunger Prevention Coalition of Central Oregon. Rudy and his wife, Debbie, see themselves as part of the community and do whatever they can to give back to the community. Rudy has been a past board member of the United Way, the Bend Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary Club; and in 2000, he was named the Deschutes County United Way Volunteer Citizen of the Year.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned over the years is that you’re only going to make the right decision about 75 percent of the time. But that is all right, as long as you recognize your mistakes and do something to correct them,” said Rudy Dory.
