The Bend Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore Reclamation Team are partnering with Deschutes County Sherriff’s Department to completely deconstruct the old State Police Building on Jamison St. at the north end of Bend.
This will be an incredible win-win-win for the community, saving the tax payers approximately $40,000, keeping 50,000 cubic feet of material out of the landfill and earning Bend Area Habitat for Humanity an estimated $10,000. During the process, the building will also be used for Fire Department and S.W.A.T team training.
Deschutes County Inmate Work Crews will assist with the project for the first six weeks. To make this project a success for the community and the organization, volunteers are still needed Monday through Friday (and some Saturdays), 9 a.m. – 4pm until the completion of the project in April.
Deschutes County had the opportunity to purchase the property in January 2008. Since the Oregon State Police moved to their new facility 18 months ago the building has been vacant. Due to a variety of factors including the extreme age of the pre-existing OSP structure and the annual cost of upkeep and maintenance of the building, Sheriff Blanton made the determination to de-construct the facility.
Sheriff Blanton said: “This will be a win – win for us and our community, with the opportunity to assist Habitat for Humanity, save money, and will come at no cost to the general public.”
After considerable research and planning, future plans will be considered for the potential use of this property.
