The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners has completed the recruitment process for the County Administrator. Although two applicants were selected as finalists the commissioners have decided not to offer a position to either at this time.
The position opened in October 2011 and closed December 16, 2011. The County Administrator is appointed by and serves at the discretion of the Board of County Commissioners.
More than fifty applicants applied for the position. The most qualified applicants received a video phone interview and this pool was narrowed to seven candidates who completed in-person interviews at the beginning of February. The extensive process involved multiple interview panels, various assessments, and a reception open to the public. Interview panel members included representatives from the business community, a fire chief, county department heads and staff, the Sheriff, the District Attorney, and government partners. After considering input from the public, employees, and interview panelists, the Board reduced the list of candidates to two: Walter Munchheimer and Mike Segrest. The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office conducted reference and thorough background checks.
Upon conclusion of the extensive recruitment process, the Board announced that Deschutes County will not be extending a job offer to Walter Munchheimer or Mike Segrest. The Commissioners would like to thank the public and Deschutes County employees for their input and involvement in the process. Erik Kropp will continue to serving as Interim County Administrator. Over the next few weeks the Commissioners will discuss next steps to fill the County Administrator position.
Commissioner Tammy Baney stated, “Deschutes County is fortunate to have competent and dedicated employees, led by experienced department directors and a capable Interim County Administrator. We are on target for a balanced budget, have clear goals for the next year, and are well positioned to take the time necessary to hire the right person for administrator.”
