Transparency in Government

What you don’t know won’t hurt you… or will it? As a taxpayer and citizen what public records are you entitled to know? City Club of Central Oregon once again sets the stage for engaging and more importantly, relevant discussions you will not want to miss on July 19 (11am-1pm).

How much information is too much and who should decide where to draw the line?

Is it the proverbial “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” or do you have the right to know…

  • If your child’s teacher or bus driver is licensed to carry a concealed firearm?
  • If your neighbor is a sexual offender?
  • If the house down the street is licensed to grow marijuana for medicinal purposes?
  • If someone you know has been arrested for an alleged crime?
  • What happens in executive sessions? Since media can attend executive sessions (but cannot report on what was discussed) should you be able to attend as well?

As always, whether the answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’ there is more than one viewpoint to be shared, so join the City Club conversation on Thursday, July 19, when the below panel of experts discuss these and other transparency topics.

Patrick Flaherty, Deschutes County district attorney – appeals of public records decisions and possible ramifications for over-disclosure/under-disclosure.

Richard Coe, Bulletin editorial board – speaks to hot/controversial topics in transparency debate (local and global issues regarding transparency).

Erin Foote Marlowe, Source Weekly reporter – public policy for transparency in government.

Duane Bosworth, First Amendment attorney – policy for certain exclusions to transparency (i.e., attorney-client privileges, government executive sessions).
