How does Central Oregon’s growing beer industry affect our region? City Club of Central Oregon presents a panel of experts on Thursday, August 16 to discuss these and other questions:

  • What economic impact do our region’s breweries have in relation to employment, tourism, event sponsorships, community support, etc.?
  • How many craft breweries can our region support? Have we reached our saturation point?
  • What impact does Central Oregon breweries have on our region’s water and sewer systems?
  • What is the traded sector (out-of-market dollars) impact of the craft brew industry to the Central Oregon economy?
  • Should we be concerned about the local brewery scene and the social consequences associated with alcohol consumption?

The panelists include

  • Gary Fish, Founder and CEO of Deschutes Brewery. Gary will discuss Deschutes Brewery’s commitment to sustainability, to in-stream flows, to community service, great beer, and innovation.
  • Carolyn Eagan, Regional Economist, Oregon Employment Division. Carolyn will be discussing her latest article scheduled to be published in August regarding the latest employment numbers for Oregon Breweries with a breakdown for Central Oregon, as well as anecdotal evidence of synergy in other industries such as tourism.
  • Jon Skidmore, Assistant City Manager. Jon will share the efforts the City is making to accommodate growth in the craft brewing industry, as well as the constraints the City is facing (i.e., collection and treatment systems, etc.).
  • Garrett Wales, Central Oregon Brewers Guild President and 10 Barrel Brewing partner. Garrett will address what’s hot/ what’s not; Central Oregon’s role in the North American craft brewing industry; and issues being faced by Central Oregon brewers (i.e., legislative concerns, tax issues, regulatory constraints).
