Saturday, August 11 at 10am customers are invited to bring their own 5 gallon bucket to fill with the nutrient rich, locally produced compost soil derived from the commercial compost food collection program.

In partnership with Deschutes Recycling, Newport Ave. Market will host a compost giveaway event this Saturday. After a year of participating in the food composting collection project, Newport Ave. Market is thrilled to now exclusively offer the by-product of food composting. This Saturday at 10am customers are invited to bring and fill a 5-gallon bucket (free of charge) with the ready to use, nutrient rich compost soil at Newport Ave. Market. One cubic yard ReGrow Compost bags will also be available for purchase.

Deschutes Recycling receives and processes approximately 10 tons of compostable food material each week from local food stores, hospitals, restaurants and schools. The ReGrow Compost is a result of the collected food materials, mixed with yard debris compost, resulting in the final product – a nutrient rich soil to be used as an exclusive supplement to the sandy Central Oregon soils. Central Oregon soils are naturally poor in quality and lack organic matter, which can be the source of many plant problems. Soils amended with ReGrow Compost will provide the benefits of water retention and nutrients, requiring less water and fertilizer, and enabling plants and blooms to grow larger and faster and resist disease.

“The initial response to our ReGrow Compost product has been much more successful than we ever thought,” Brian Stone, Deschutes Recycling Operations Manager. “People in this area recognize the importance of organic matter in their garden mix and are excited to purchase a product that is produced locally and completes the recycling circle.”

Newport Ave. Market launched its composting program in partnership with Cascade Disposal in May 2011 in an effort to expand its commitment to the community and planet. Today, over 2,000 pounds of food waste is collected each week for conversion into reusable gardening compost. Introducing the composting program has allowed the Market to reduce its garbage contribution from 251 yards of garbage each month to only 104 yards, a decrease of nearly 60%.

“We are absolutely thrilled to bring the composting program full circle by offering the exclusive ReGrow Compost soil,” said Rudy Dory, Owner of Newport Ave. Market. “We have significantly reduced landfill waste and save approximately $100 per month by implementing the compost program, but more importantly, we have the satisfaction of knowing we are helping reduce the amount of waste going into the landfill. It is helping to create jobs and doing the right thing for the neighborhood, community, and environment.”
