Volcano Vodka Has Finally Arrived

At long last, the collaboration between two of Bend‘s artisan adult beverage producers, Volcano Vineyards and Oregon Spirit Distillers, is set for release Saturday February 2.

Volcano Vodka is a collaboration between Brad and Kathy Irwin of Oregon Spirit Distillers and Scott and Liz Ratcliff of Volcano Wine Company, producer of the Bend Blend wines and their Volcano Vineyards brand. The new collaborative spirit will be released on Groundhog Day, Saturday, February 2, at Oregon Spirit Distillers on Reed Market Road from 12-4pm.

The vodka is unique in that it is distilled from wine that had been aged in French Oak barrels. Scott Ratcliff of Volcano Vineyards explains, “One of the unique characteristics of this vodka is that it has a slightly oaky nose due to the fact that it aged in oak. The distillation concentrated those aromas, giving it a nose reminiscent of whiskey.”

Three barrels were distilled to make this high end vodka: one barrel of syrah from Fortmiller Vineyard in Talent, Oregon, one barrel of Cabernet Sauvignon and one of Zinfandel both from

Gallaway Vineyards in Healdsburg, California in Sonoma County where Scott got his start in winemaking.

The label and packaging were designed by Russ McIntosh of Studio Absolute in Tumalo. The vodka is in wine bottles in homage to its vintage beginnings.

There will be only 10 cases of it available to the public and these initial 120 bottles will be the only ones ever made with this formulation due to the high production costs. The wines in the formulation were all single vineyard varietals from top quality vineyards, then barrel aged for years.

Brad Irwin of Oregon Spirit Distillers enjoyed the collaboration. “The partnership that went into creating this product was really fun and we’re excited to have been involved.”

Volcano is preparing to add a licensed Distilled Spirits Plant within their winery space to be able to begin producing spirits in late summer or early fall 2013.

Volcano Vineyards is recognized as one of the Pacific Northwest’s finest, small lot, micro-wineries specializing in vineyard designated wines and proprietary blends. Likely the smallest bonded production winery in America at 227 square feet, the Volcano Vineyards winery and tasting room are located on Bend’s Westside in the Century Center complex.
