Miller Nash LLP, one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest and most respected multiservice law firms, celebrated its 140th anniversary this month by announcing the establishment of the Miller Nash Legacy Fund, a charitable fund established to enable the firm to pursue its philanthropic goals for many years to come. The fund, managed by The Oregon Community Foundation, will support nonprofit organizations throughout Oregon and Washington through annual grants.

The Miller Nash Legacy Fund will initially be funded by firm contributions of $140 for every attorney and staff member currently employed by Miller Nash, thus seeding the fund with $35,000. Additionally, the firm has set up a program to match individual employee contributions of up to $140 per person, bringing the firm’s potential contribution to $70,000 this year. Each year thereafter, the firm will contribute additional money to the fund, as well as offering the attorneys and staff opportunities to contribute to it.

“Establishing the Miller Nash Legacy Fund is our way of perpetuating our culture of community partnership and service,” said Miller Nash Chair Dennis Rawlinson. “If you look back on our history, you’ll find that some of our earliest partners were governors and senators—people very much involved in public service. We are particularly proud of the firm’s ongoing commitment to encourage our people to serve on boards of nonprofits, to assume leadership roles in civic organizations, to volunteer on an individual basis and to contribute financially to worthy causes.”

“Miller Nash has chosen a generous and enduring way to celebrate its 140th year in business,” said Max Williams, president and CEO of The Oregon Community Foundation and a former Miller Nash attorney. “The creation of the Miller Nash Legacy Fund is a true reflection of the firm’s dedication to meeting the current and future needs of our Northwest communities. I believe Miller Nash’s contribution was in part inspired by the firm’s assistance in the recent Fred Fields Trust donation of more than $150 million to The Oregon Community Foundation.”

One of the longest-operating law firms in Oregon and Washington, Miller Nash was established in Portland in 1873 by Henry H. Northup and William B. Gilbert. Today the firm has 112 attorneys advising clients throughout the world. Miller Nash’s history parallels the expansion and growth of the Pacific Northwest, and the firm has been integrally involved in the business community and issues affecting the region.

“For 140 years, Miller Nash has been made up of civic-minded attorneys who take pride in our ability to positively impact the region’s economy, while assisting our clients through a broad range of legal situations,” said Rawlinson. “We’re proud of our rich history, which has grown with the Pacific Northwest, and look forward to further strengthening our reputation for excellent client service and community engagement.”

Today, Miller Nash provides legal services to individuals and businesses throughout the Northwest from offices in Portland; Bend, Ore.; Vancouver, Wash.; and Seattle. The firm’s attorneys focus on a variety of matters in business law and commercial litigation.
