Heather Krantz, MD has opened her new office Whole Woman Wellness in the Mt. Bachelor Village Office Park in Bend. Dr. Krantz is a board-certified Ob/Gyn with over 20 years experience.  She has completed the world-renowned University of Arizona Fellowship in integrative medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil.  She is also a medical acupuncturist and teaches mindfulness meditation.

She holds a bachelor of arts in German, Duke University, M.D., University of Kansas internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology, University of Kansas, medical acupuncture for physicians, Helms Medical Institute.
Dr. Krantz practices integrative medicine, which is healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person including all aspects of lifestyle.  Integrative medicine emphasizes the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient, is informed by evidence, and utilizes conventional as well as complementary and alternative medicine modalities to facilitate the patient’s innate healing response.

“My husband, son and I moved to Bend for the reasons many people do–quality of life and the love of the outdoors,” explained Dr. Krantz.  “During my 20+ years since residency, I have worked in several different practice environments including Kaiser HMO, private practice and non-profit community health settings.
“Several years ago, I started seeing a disconnect between what I could do as a traditional MD and true wellness among my patients.  I felt very limited in what I had to offer my patients to truly help fulfill their needs.  The goal had become disease monitoring and stopgap coverage rather than wellness and quality of life.”

These reasons led Dr. Krantz to the integrative medicine fellowship founded by Andrew Weil MD.  The fellowship spends two years covering many different  complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) modalities including nutrition, micronutrients, supplements, energy medicine, botanical medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, spirituality in medicine, Mind Body medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy and multiple units on integrative approaches to various specialties like pediatrics, GI medicine, oncology and women’s health.

“The objective  of integrative medicine is to really see the patient as a whole person and to develop a partnership with wellness as the objective,” explained Dr. Krantz.  “My avid interest in Eastern philosophy  lead me to pursue additional training in acupuncture with Joseph Helms, MD and mindfulness with Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli.

“I started Whole Woman Wellness because I see a gap present in Bend between the traditional and the alternative medical communities that needs to be bridged, especially in women’s healthcare.  Integrative medicine’s goal is to bridge this gap.  I am a traditionally trained western MD who is able to call upon my additional training in complementary and alternative medicine to offer a well-rounded approach toward wellness.
Patients truly need more than the average seven minute slot allowed in most traditional practices.  They need a doctor who is open to all modalities which may lead to healing and who can view all options with a critical eye aimed at the available scientific evidence.

“In my practice, I meet with the patient for over an hour and go through an extensive history.  I then put together an extensive list of ideas and recommendations and have the patient return in a few days to review the list.  We then decide together which recommendations to implement and what our plan is.”
Dr. Krantz feels that medicine and life are both about balance.  Achieving wellness, contentment and peace of mind are the path and the goal.
