Featuring interactive presentations, a question and answer session and a panel discussion from acknowledged national and/or regional experts on human trafficking, the Anti-Trafficking Conference will be held at the Mt. Bachelor Village Conference Center on Monday September 23.
Speakers include Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney JR Ujifusa, Deschutes County Deputy District Attorney Brigid Turner, Detective Brendan McGuire – Portland Police Bureau Minor Victims of Sex Trafficking Detail, Detective Karna Barnard – Portland Police Bureau Minor Victims of Sex Trafficking Detail, Deborah Raffaell from the Department of Human Services Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Unit and Amanda Swanson from the Multnomah County Sexual Assault Response Center.
Ujifusa has been working on human trafficking crimes for the last five years and is also a special assistant United States attorney for the district of Oregon focusing on federal human trafficking crimes. He oversees the Prostitution Coordination Team, the Sex Buyers Accountability and Diversion Program, First Offender Program, Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children Law Enforcement group and is the primary prosecutor for all felony prostitution and human trafficking cases within Multnomah County. He has been a Deputy District Attorney since 2005 and has also prosecuted drug crimes, felony property crimes, violent crimes, homicides and gang related crimes.
The interactive instruction will provide participants with:
• An updated understanding of the current status of applicable state and federal laws
• A comprehensive look, through a multi–‐discipline approach, to real world cases and issues
• A case review and information relating to impediments and challenges of investigating and prosecuting human trafficking (HT) cases
• A case review and information relating to impediments and challenges of obtaining initial information about HT cases and providing services for HT victims
• The do’s and don’ts of managing the case and the victim throughout the process
• A panel discussion and question and answer
• Helpful checklist for initial responders and investigators.
The training presented by the Guardian Group and is free of charge and open to law enforcement, prosecutors, prevention and after–‐care providers, as well as other professional practitioners. Additionally, continuing education credits for law enforcement will be available.
