Family Resource Center of Central Oregon: No One has to Parent Alone

0

Parenting is among the hardest jobs with the fewest instructions. Parents and caregivers are asked to be role models, on the clock 24/7, know the different strategies for parenting toddlers and parenting teens, prepare children for learning in school, help them to stay in school and graduate, and then go forth as self-sufficient young adults. Parenting is a big job.

WE ARE HERE TO HELP Family Resource Center of Central Oregon (FRC) has been providing parenting education to all families for more than 22 years. We know that parenting is not instinctive and that parenting is a learned skill. We offer low-or no-cost classes and information and resources to strengthen and support family relationships. We work with families from all walks of life—young parents, couples, single parents, blended families, and increasingly, grandparents and aunts and uncles. Our community based classes give families with children of all ages the confidence, hope and tools to support their children and themselves.

IMPACTING PARENTS AND CHILDREN During the 2012-2013 year 448 parents, caregivers and grandparents participated in community parenting classes and workshops coordinated by Family Resource Center. The majority of classes and workshops are offered in Deschutes County and presented in both English and Spanish. The Oregon Parenting Education Collaborative (OPEC) is helping FRC expand services in Crook and Jefferson Counties. Our services are offered in community centers, churches, early education centers and schools.

Our programs help parents learn new ways to cope with the day to day stress of parenting, what to expect at different stages of child development, how to protect children from unsafe situations and how to set reasonable limits and rules. Parents also see significant improvements in their child’s behavior after participating in a class series, in areas such as showing concern for others, willingness to follow rules, and getting along with others.
