Reversing the Decline of the Middle Class: Saving the American Dream

0

In the true spirit of City Club, with respect for open dialogue and diverse opinions, the City Club of Central Oregon invites you to participate in conversation with U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley on Tuesday, November 26.

The ‘American Dream’ is slipping away from the hopes of many Americans. It’s true that the past few years have been tough economically for our country, but the reality is that the income inequality we are seeing in today’s society has been a long time coming.

Productivity has risen steadily since World War II, but wages have stagnated for more than 30 years and the middle class is shrinking – along with the American Dream. If we are going to get back on track as a nation and focus on growing our economy and the middle class, then we’ve got to realize that what we’ve been doing the last thirty years hasn’t been working. We need to measure our success by how well ordinary people are doing, not by aggregate numbers. From infrastructure and education investments, to fixing the housing market and creating a new vision for our budget and tax code, we can make smart decisions that will lead to a better future for our children.
