Facebook announced the 21 recipients of the Facebook Prineville Data Center’s 2014 Local Community Action Grants. These nonprofits and schools were awarded more than $105,000 for projects that put the power of technology to use for community benefit, help improve education at all levels, and to bring people together either physically or virtually.
A letter has been sent to recipients with details, including an invitation for them to attend a reception and tour at the data center on Friday, April 4, 2014.
Since 2011, the Facebook Prineville Grants Program has awarded $415,000 to Crook County nonprofits and schools.
Advantage Smiles for Kids – $3,000
To provide orthodontic treatment for low-income, at-risk children in Crook County. Brace Place of Central Oregon will match the award as in-kind treatment.
Central Oregon Community College Prineville Campus and Crook County High School- $10,000
To provide a new, 12-week Comp TIA A+ Certification course, the starting point for those seeking careers in IT, in partnership with Crook County High School.
Children’s Vision Foundation – $5,500
To provide community vision screenings and reports to all Crook County elementary schools and families.
Christmas in the Pines – $5,000
To provide ice skating rink, bazaars, community crafters and local vendors.
Crook County Foundation – $5,000
Funding local high school bands and family activities for the Picnic in the Park kickoff celebration.
Crook County High School & Middle School- Track and Field – $1,500
To provide a laptop and Hy-Tek for the high school and middle school track teams to run larger and more efficient track meets, bringing more teams and business to Prineville.
Crook County High School Computer Science Dept. – $8,000
To provide essential tools and supplies to provide student training in programming, video production and electronics.
Crook County High School Science Department – $8,000
To further outfit the physics and chemistry lab, and life science lab. Purchases include 12 Lab Quest Minis, 12 blood-pressure sensors, 12 EKG sensors, 6 oxygen sensors and 3 Lab Quest 2 Interfaces.
Crook County High School Senior All Night Party 2014 – $2,500
To pay for a venue for the alcohol- and drug-free, senior all-night graduation party. Students and parents raise all funds for this celebration.
Crook County High School Youth Transition Program – $3,500
To purchase the computer, software and associated hardware for point-of-sale training in the YTP program and the special education department.
Crook County Kids Inc. – $3,400
To purchase and implement Kidtrax, a web-based management system to safely account for youth members during club hours and organize and secure sensitive family information.
Crook County Middle School Science Department KidWind Project – $10,000
To fund the second Prineville KidWind Challenge, a student-driven, wind-turbine design competition, and to further science, technology, engineering, math and sustainability education.
Crook County School District Torches n’ Pitchforks Literary Journal – $4,000
To purchase two laptop computers with high-end graphics capabilities plus two software accounts to the Adobe creative cloud, in order to transform Torches n’ Pitchforks into a student-directed endeavor under teacher advisement.
Crook County School District Dual Language Program – $1,800
To purchase 20 additional hand-held computerized learning devices for disadvantaged youth attending Ochoco Elementary School, to improve letter and sound recognition and phonemic awareness for preschool and kindergarten students.
Crook County School District Kindergarten Classes – $4,800
To purchase 30 Leap Frog TAG reading pens for four kindergarten classes in the Crook County School District.
Crook County Speech Language Pathology Department – $1,500
To supply iPads to two speech-language pathology assistants who serve grades K-12, directly directly impacting 152 students receiving special education services for communication, and extend to children served through the Response to Intervention Model, co-teaching environments, and consultation.
Crooked River Roundup – $5,000
To provide funding for national-level rodeo acts and athletes.
Healthy Beginnings – $1,500To support a health and developmental community-screening clinic in Prineville, allowing Healthy Beginnings to continue offering this critical service to young children in Crook County.
Heart of Oregon Corps – $9,000
To help fund three crews of local youth for eight weeks of summer employment. In the field, youth gain skills while building trails, preventing wildfires and connecting with their public lands.
Humane Society of the Ochocos – $5,000
To promote microchip application throughout Crook County by documenting and registering each pet equipped with a microchip.
Pioneer High School – $7,000
To purchase 25 laptop computers, providing each classroom with the tools needed for daily research and product development required for students’ online independent study courses, proficiency-based courses, and writing courses.
