Showcase On Wednesday, June 11, the students of the Sisters High School Americana Community Luthier program will showcase their work at The Belfry, from 5:30-7pm.
The program was established to inspire young people to learn the age-old craft of guitar and ukulele building, and to build handmade instruments over the course of two trimesters.
There will be live music performed on the instruments built, and up to 30 handmade guitars and six ukuleles on display that evening.
The Sisters Luthier program is one of only two instrument-building programs in public high schools in the country. The public is invited to this event to experience and celebrate the innovative ways the Americana Project continues to lend value and enrichment activities to the Sisters School District.
Under the direction of Tony Cosby and with support from Bill MacDonald, Kerry Bott, David Perkins and many other volunteers, Sisters students have been building custom guitars and ukuleles for six years. The program is a partnership between the Sisters Folk Festival, Breedlove Guitars and the Sisters School District.
Over the course of the past two years, the program has received close to $50,000 from the Chichester-duPont Foundation for materials and supplies, and to upgrade and purchase industry-standard equipment to help vocational training. The success of Sisters High School’s Luthier program is widely acclaimed. Many other schools in the area are contemplating improvements to their own woods programs and are excited about the possibility of replicating these ideas.
Special thanks to The Belfry for providing a beautiful community space to showcase the work by these talented students.
