Don Stevens, AIA Emeritus and principal at BBT Architects (BBT), announced his retirement today after 50 years. Stevens received a bachelor of science degree in architecture from the University of Cincinnati, a master of architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania in the design studio of architect Louis Kahn and studied architectural and urban design in Denmark as a Fulbright Scholar. He was also an associate professor of architecture at the University of Cincinnati for 13 years.
Throughout his career, Stevens has been a partner in large and small architectural firms including becoming a principal at BBT in 2008 after a merger with his former firm, Stevens Architect. He has designed numerous projects of varying size and scale and received several AIA Design Awards for projects including the Butterfield Senior Center in Ohio, which also received a HUD Biennial Design Award.
“When does one know it is time to retire?” asked Stevens. “In my early 40s as a professor, I found myself at odds with the philosophy of my department head. I left my tenured position, because it felt right to move to a new avenue of my life. Now I an owner of a much respected architectural firm, one that is transitioning.
“Two years ago my partner Todd and I took in a third partner. Renee [Alexander] not only produces outstanding projects, she brings in the work, moreover she gets involved with the community, the state and the region.
“We recently elevated Kevin Shaver to an associate level, he has clients that follow him and he is a consummate architect. So BBT is in good hands and the time just feels right!”
In Central Oregon, Stevens designed the Bend Senior Center, Grace First Lutheran Church and the COCC Redmond Technology Center, among countless other projects. He has been practicing in Central Oregon since 1990, and is an NCARB registered architect in the states of Oregon and Nevada. Stevens, a well-respected community leader, has many well-wishers in his retirement:

“It’s always a pleasure to work with Don on the numerous projects throughout the region that he has designed,” said Jeff Martin, president of Cascade Publications Inc. “He has an incredible upbeat attitude about his work and the contractors he works with. Perhaps the best thing is that he’ll have more time to golf and I hope to join him in the endeavor.”
Stevens currently serves as on the board and is the past president of City Club of Central Oregon, is a member of Mt. Bachelor Rotary Club, and lives in Bend with his wife, Susie Stevens. Don is currently designing their new home to be built in Tetherow within the next year.
