Winning Over Anger & Violence

Winning Over Anger and Violence is a small nonprofit with a big mission: to reduce the cycle of violence in our homes, schools and community. They provide free counseling to students in middle and high schools

and subsidize counseling for adults in financial need.

Winning Over has been working in Bend and Central Oregon for over 26 years with local youth and adults who want to find alternative behaviors to cope with anger and violence.

“We began after a local man called a radio station in desperation when he could not access information about how to get help with his violent behavior,” explained Karen Hobbs, executive director. “The local station had no answers for him and began to do some research off air… Winning Over was born as a result of the contact with the media — all in the days before Twitter, Facebook, Google and all the information superhighway access we have now.

“We work with the perpetrators and this makes it hard to gain recognition for the lives we have changed- our clients have already experienced the stigmas their actions have brought about and want to move on after their counseling!

“At Winning Over we believe that prevention is better than the cure. Our work is school alongside the counselors has helped many young people to have a fresh start with relationships inside school, in the wider community and with parents and siblings especially.”

Court mandated adults who cannot afford counseling have been helped by Winning Over. Taking an anger management class is not easy if you have no insurance or work.

“All of our work has been funded by local businesses including Brooks Resources, private donations, the sale of tickets in our famous raffle and by generous grants from major foundations such as OCF, The Autzen Foundation and Cow Creek Umpqua Foundation,” said Hobbs. “This year we are holding a major community Yard Sale to raise funds and to raise the awareness of the public that Winning Over is here to help when there is a need to find alternatives to anger and violence.

“The event will feature local music, food, art on the spot and much more…it will be a way for us to get our name known and for folks to have fun whilst supporting a great cause. All proceeds will go towards supporting youth in local schools with counseling groups. Not just Bend’s Winning Yard Sale but a chance to learn and have fun at the same time.”
