A dynamic symposium “The Caregiver Experience: Surviving to Thriving” will be offered on Thursday, May 12, 5:30–7pm at the Bend Senior Center. This free, open-to-the-public event will feature Dr. Vicki Schmall, executive director and gerontology and training specialist with Aging Concerns in West Linn, Oregon and Professor Emeritus of OSU. Dr. Schmall served as the director of the OSU program on gerontology for over 25 years and is the lead author of The Caregiver Helpbook: Powerful Tools for Caregiving.
The free event is coordinated and sponsored by Evergreen In-Home Care Services and supported by Central Oregon Council On Aging, South Valley Bank and Whispering Winds.
Caring for a parent, spouse, loved one or other can be daunting and caregivers can become isolated and feel alone with the daily challenges of caregiving. This presentation will offer useful lessons, advice, and hope for those caring for another. Dr. Schmall’s presentation will address best practices for taking care of the caregiving, identifying and reducing stress and communicating effectively with others. Resources, information and referral sources will be provided. Light refreshments will be served and the event is free of charge and open to anyone with an interest
in caregiving.
