Opportunity Knocks, Central Oregon’s small business advisory organization, will host a Best Practices Seminar on“Character Based Leadership on October 22. The seminar will take place at the Doubletree by Hilton in downtown Bend from 11:30-1pm with lunch included.

The seminar will help attendees to learn the fundamental steps to increasing the leadership element of character in themselves and others as business leaders, community members, change agents and allies. In addition, attendees will learn how to measure success in terms of making a positive impact on their community, not just in terms of profitability.

According to presenter Jim Morris “Character” doesn’t have to do with always doing what’s “right” but learning to balance key paradoxes when win/lose or win/win solutions aren’t visible or possible, Character is as much about how we BE as it is about what we DO. “

Business owners question: How can I do what’s right and still make a profit? Competition for the best talent in the next generation workforce will be won by organizations who can articulate how their product or service makes a difference to society, not just to the customer.

Research shows that purpose and impact matters more to Millennials than it has to previous generations.

The Seminar will be presented by Jim Morris, co-owner Moementum. Jim and his wife/partner Moe Carrick are the owners of Moementum, a Bend-based boutique global consultancy focusing on healthy cultures, developing enduring leaders and aligning strategies and teams.

In 2007, he published a book on traits-based leadership development – The Five Insights of Enduring Leaders and has spoken extensively on the subject – urging CEOs, leadership teams and corporate boards to focus on the elements of character in picking and developing their leaders and strategies.

Morris began his career with 15 years of non-profit leadership experience before moving into leadership positions in private and publically traded companies. He has taught, facilitated, coached and consulted for Duke University’s Executive Leadership Development Center, Aon Consulting/Pecos River, White Men as Full Diversity Partners.

Morris and Carrick are also adjunct faculty for Virginia Tech where they developed and teach the certificate in leadership for scientists and engineer course for working executives.
