A 47-year-old Bend man was arrested August 20 for suspicion of luring a minor for sexual conduct and online sexual corruption of a minor. His arrest was following an undercover police operation. A 16-year-old girl reported that he approached her about babysitting and later allegedly sent messages that made her uncomfortable. Police said an officer took over the communication while posing as the teen, ultimately leading to the man’s arrest. This story is a powerful reminder of why youth need tools to recognize unsafe behavior and to feel empowered to speak up.
The case highlights the heart of In Our Backyard’s (IOB) work: recognize when something’s not right and report it. Teens Against Trafficking, IOB’s school prevention program equips youth with practical tools to recognize concerning behaviors, unsafe situations, trafficking risks, and warning signs. This knowledge empowers them to make informed decisions, seek help, and support their peers.
On Friday, October 16, Central Oregonians can help make this work possible at IOB’s Annual Freedom Fundraiser: Disco Rodeo. Guests are invited to dust off their cowboy boots and add a little disco sparkle for an evening of fun and purpose. The evening features a champagne welcome, dinner by Chef Brian Garza of Fire Fare, complimentary beer and wine, and live and silent auctions and prizes.
A local Bend survivor will share how human trafficking prevention education is reaching students in Central Oregon schools. In conjunction with IOB’s 17-year anti-trafficking efforts surrounding Super Bowl, Lieutenant Josh Singleton from Santa Clara County, DA’s office will share actual case stories and outcomes from our collaborative 2026 Super Bowl efforts. During that operation 29 sex traffickers were arrested and 73 victims recovered, including ten minors.
The evening will also feature the Pick Your Paradise Raffle, where a $100 ticket gives one lucky winner the opportunity to choose an unforgettable getaway from a selection of dream destinations. Funds raised will support IOB’s work to educate youth, mobilize communities, equip volunteers and businesses, collaborate with survivors and law enforcement, and create actionable pathways to freedom.
