Visual Thinking Northwest, a Bend-based media production company since 1997, has steadily become one of the more prolific storytellers in the state. In 2014 alone, the Bend-based company created notable videos on Tsunami Preparedness in Newport, The Oregon Youth Conservation Corps in Salem, Broadband Awareness in Portland, and Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern Oregon. Locally, projects are in various stages of completion for Bend Research, Structus Technologies, Hayden Homes, Deschutes County and Sunriver Resort.
“Our strength has always been in illustrating to the viewer what a particular company or organization is all about ,” stated Executive Producer Kevin Raichl, “but while we used to work with primarily Central Oregon companies, we now work all over the state.”
Raichl attributes the recent recession to the expansion of Visual Thinking’s range. “When things went south, Central Oregon was particularly hard-hit, and we had to expand our marketing efforts, as many Oregon media production companies folded up or moved away. We worked with SCORE and other Oregon business advisors, to make our brand identity consistent with the myriad of government and business-based websites advertising for video production services.
“The best thing we did was register under the Oregon Procurement Network or ORPIN. All state or county agencies needing virtually any product or service publicize their needs on the ORPIN Network. We started responding to Request For Proposals, or RFPs, and out of six video RFPs we won four and placed second in the other two, edging20-30 other media production companies locally and statewide. We also won one in California. I think that really demonstrates the value and quality of our work.”
Visual Thinking Northwest is currently working on a second video for Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, The Deschutes River for Deschutes Historical Society, The Oregon Youth Authority, Bend Research and the Pacific Maritime Museum. A documentary on the Oregon State Capitol: Beneath The Dome aired on OPB in September.
“It’s pretty cool to be able to do this kind of work and still live in Bend, Oregon,” said Raichl. “You’re supposed to live in the big city to have this kind of business, but when I moved here right out of college in 1977, it was everything I ever wanted in a community. We’ve raised a family here, developed a great business here. Now, thanks to the internet and our good reputation, we’re doing some really good work for some very cool companies. We’re on a roll right now.”
