Selecting Your Design Professional

When I first arrived in Central Oregon, there was only one architect practicing in Bend. Today the region has more architects than can be counted on both hands…several times over. In addition, there are a number of home designers offering services. With the myriad of options, how can one possibly choose when in need of professional design services?

The most obvious start might be reputation and/or familiarity, but many qualified firms or individuals could be excluded with this focus only. The most thorough path would be to research all available options. Narrowing the options might begin with interviews of the professional’s past clients as well as contractors and other project team members with firsthand experience of the professional’s strengths, abilities and, perhaps…shortcomings.

But what are the most important attributes in the search for the right design professional? One would hope that “good design” is the primary goal. Good design is measured by success in the arenas of aesthetics, functionality, performance over time (including weathering cycles), response to budget expectations and fulfillment of the client’s design program. Other attributes of importance might include some or all of the following:

  • A focus on creativity
  • Interest in delivering designs that are appealing years after delivery
  • Thorough and detailed communication
  • Ability to listen…to the client as well as other project team members…and yet

provide council

  • Quality and completeness of construction documents
  • Timely responsiveness
  • Code knowledge / experience
  • Delivery of architectural detailing not only with aesthetics in mind but also

ease of maintenance over building life

  • Tempered ego
  • Fee value

Bottom line…there is much to consider in sorting out the best candidate to address one’s professional design needs. However, the time and effort expended in the pursuit will more likely than not lead to a healthy process and superior results.
