Stretching Your Insurance Costs: How To Save Money Without Compromising Coverage

Insurance is a necessary expense that protects you financially in the event of a disaster or accident. If you’re looking to reduce expenses to put more money in your pocket, a few simple steps can help you save on your auto, homeowners, business and life insurance without compromising your coverage.

“There is healthy competition for insurance customers in the Northwest,” said Kenton Brine, NW Insurance Council president.  “Companies are working hard to earn your business – giving consumers a large number of companies to choose from.  Shopping wisely will ensure that you get the coverage and pricing that best meets your needs.”

NW Insurance Council and Insurance Information Institute offer tips on how consumers can reduce premiums and save money while still protecting your family and finances:
Comparison shop – Prices for the same coverage can vary by hundreds of dollars, so it pays to shop around.

Buy your home and auto policies from the same insurer.  Some companies that sell Homeowners, Auto and Liability coverage will take five to 15 percent off your premium if you buy two or more policies from them.

Ask for higher deductibles.  By requesting higher deductibles on Property coverage or Collision and Comprehensive coverage, you can lower your costs substantially.  For example, increasing your deductible from $200 to $500 could reduce your Collision and Comprehensive costs by 15 to 30 percent.

If you own an older car, consider dropping Collision and/or Comprehensive Coverage on that vehicle. If the insured vehicle is worth less than 10 times the premium, purchasing the coverage may not be cost effective.

Take advantage of low mileage discounts. Some companies offer discounts to motorists who drive a less-than-average number of miles per year.

Maintain a good credit history. Most insurers include credit information among those factors they use to price insurance policies, because research has shown that people who effectively manage their credit have fewer claims. Demonstrating responsible financial behavior can help save money on your insurance policy.

Ask about other discounts. Teenage drivers may qualify for “good student” discounts, while more “life-experienced” drivers may be able to obtain loyalty or senior driver discounts. Remember: companies offer many types of discounts, but they don’t all offer the same discounts.  It’s important to ask your agent or insurance company about any discounts available to you.

Brine also reminded consumers to review their coverage regularly. “It pays to get an insurance checkup with your agent or company at least once each year,” Brine said. “As our lives change – drivers are added, cars are replaced, families grow, homes grow in value – it’s smart to make sure your insurance policies continue to meet your needs.”
