One of Bend’s Oldest Architecture Firms Looks Ahead to the Next 50 Years

When BBT opened its doors in 1976, the population of Bend was less than 15,000. Since then, the city has grown significantly, bringing both opportunities and challenges. Today, buildings account for roughly 40% of global carbon emissions in their construction and operation. Every decision made throughout the design has a lasting effect. As designers, we take our role seriously, striving to create buildings that serve our community while minimizing environmental impact.

Joining the Effort

Last year, BBT joined the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2030 Commitment — a nationwide initiative challenging architecture firms to reduce emissions across their project portfolios to zero. Since its inception, over 1,350 firms have signed on, and BBT was one of four firms in Oregon to join last year.

The AIA 2030 Commitment establishes energy use reduction targets and requires firms to report project energy usage data annually. Reported data is analyzed and compiled into an annual report. This is a valuable tool for monitoring industry’s impact and provides accountability on reducing emissions from production and operation of buildings.

Beyond reporting, signatories are required to develop a Sustainability Action Plan (SAP), outlining their sustainability vision and goals. Our internal sustainability committee worked collaboratively to craft initiatives that shape both our design approach and studio culture.

Process Inspires Progress

A key initiative in our SAP involves integrating new tools into our design process. This year, we invested in Sefaira, a building performance simulation program that integrates with our design and drafting software. Using this tool we can efficiently evaluate design options and make more informed decisions, tuning a building to its site and climate.

This paves the way for better performance and added value for our clients. For example, strategically placing windows to harness Central Oregon’s abundant sunshine during cooler months can reduce the demand on building heating equipment. Funds that would otherwise be used for hidden building systems can be redirected to aspects of the project that enhance the function and experience of the space for users.

Advocating for Better Design

Addressing the complexity of the impacts created by the built environment requires an integrated and holistic approach. Owners, designers, and contractors must understand their role and collaborate toward a shared vision. We are committed to advocating for better design practices within our design and construction community.

Becoming a signatory of the AIA 2030 Commitment has strengthened our practice, and we encourage our colleagues to explore similar initiatives such as MEP 2040, SE 2050, and the Contractors Commitment. Each of these frameworks addresses unique aspects of emissions reduction in engineering and contracting, reinforcing the collective effort required to create a more sustainable built environment.

Looking Ahead

Next year, BBT celebrates its 50th anniversary. As we look to the future, we recognize the critical role architecture plays in shaping a sustainable and resilient community. We remain dedicated to designing with intention, maintaining a balance between the natural and built environments.
