The Source has been recognized among the Pacific Northwest’s top news organizations, earning third place in the Editorial & Commentary category in the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Northwest Excellence in Journalism Awards.
The award honors a collection of opinion and commentary pieces written by Editor-in-Chief Nicole Vulcan and Publisher Aaron Switzer that examined topics important to Central Oregon readers, including supportive housing, e-bike policies and home hardening regulations.
The SPJ Northwest Excellence in Journalism Awards recognize outstanding journalism produced across Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Entries are judged by independent journalists from outside the region and evaluated on reporting quality, writing, public service and impact.
“This recognition reflects our commitment to tackling complex local issues and fostering thoughtful community conversations,” said Aaron Switzer, publisher of The Source. “Strong local journalism doesn’t just report the news—it helps communities better understand the challenges and opportunities shaping their future.”
The award comes during a year of growth for The Source. After competing in the Small publication category for many years, the organization was moved into the Medium newsroom division in 2025 due to the expansion of its editorial operations. Despite the move to a more competitive category, The Source continued its award-winning tradition, earning recognition alongside some of the region’s most respected news organizations.
The honor follows a landmark year for The Source, which won SPJ’s General Excellence award among small newsrooms in 2024.
