Being unemployed is often a depressing and frustrating time. It can make you feel worthless, and it can also put a significant strain on your family’s finances. Sometimes, no matter how much you try, no-one is willing to give you a chance. In this situation, it is crucial you remain proactive and consider finding another means of generating an income.
The traditional methods of job hunting can take a long time. With applications and interviews, it can take weeks, maybe a month, before you know the outcome; if you’re told at all. So, why not try to put your time and efforts to good use?
Little jobs mean a lot
When you are struggling for money, any job, regardless of size or ‘importance,’ can help stabilize your income. Some companies employ people to work in their homes, either filling envelopes or other mundane tasks. Others may be interested in your talents on a freelance basis.
The money may be small, however, it is a fruitful effort of earning a little extra income. By showing you are proactive, you are also more lucrative to employers. You’ll have the attitude many recruiters are looking to hire.
Volunteering
It might not make you any money, but volunteering can have many benefits. For example, if you are working at your local shelter or another voluntary organization, it will give you a boost of confidence that you may be lacking. It is also a great experience to put on your C.V for potential employers, as it shows that there is more than money that motivates you; the charity may even give you a reference.
Some charities have paid positions for certain jobs; therefore, build a repertoire with the charity and they may wish to hire you on a full or part-time, paid basis.
Partnership with a friend
If you or a friend have been made redundant, then you may have been heavily compensated once you leave. It can be an excellent opportunity for you and a friend to go into business together. There are many ways you can start your own business; you can open a store, run a mobile catering van or buy a franchise. There is a huge range of opportunities that can accommodate a partnership, everything from a sign company franchise from Signarama, to purchasing a property and opening your own Airbnb.
Going further afield
It might sound drastic, but sometimes you need to go where the work takes you. If you are in a small town, getting a job can be tough. Trying to widen your search to other cities nearby, might give you the break you need.
This does not mean that you have to move if you can deal with the traveling and manage to commute to and from work. However, the cost of travel can make it prohibitive to stay where you are.
Although many people are struggling to find work, there are many opportunities to keep yourself entertained, with the possibility of improving you C.V and generating a small income through small business venture. Make sure never to lose hope.
