Top Commercial Projects
Cascade Business News is proud to recognize Central Oregon’s top commercial construction projects completed over the past year. There were six projects completed in 2014 with a permit cost of over $10 million including Deschutes County Jail, COCC Redmond Technology Center, Madras Performing Arts Center, St. Charles Cancer Center, Warm Springs Elementary and the Hampton Hotel (the only building that is not a public facility).
This year’s projects also include a church, two Walgreens and a Wilco, three breweries, elementary school, two hotels, two manufacturing companies, three healthcare centers, a large retail store remodel, a performing arts center, auto dealer expansion, an aircraft collection facility, a jail, a technology center, rock gym and the nonprofit Restore.
The $18.1 million Warm Springs K-8 Elementary School tops the completed projects for 2014. A long-cherished vision of educational opportunity for Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs students came to fruition with the completion of a state-of-the-art school on tribal lands. The 80,000 square foot Warm Springs Academy features modern science and computer labs – supporting a technology-rich curriculum – together with art and music rooms, a spacious gymnasium and gathering spaces including a community room accessible for public use and various cultural references dotted throughout recognizing the tribal community’s rich heritage and traditions.
The $12.9 million St. Charles Cancer Center in Bend is a comprehensive cancer center where all services are available in one location serving all of Central Oregon. Following two years of fundraising, the St. Charles Foundation exceeded its $5.7 million campaign goal to help fund the construction of an integrated cancer center. Designed as a full-service facility, services at the cancer center ranges from screening, diagnosis and treatment (including radiation and chemotherapy) to follow-up care and survivor services. St. Charles’ cancer services continue to be a leader in health care in outcomes and survival rates for people with cancer.
The long-cherished vision of a performing arts center for Madras came to life with one of the most technologically advanced venues of its type in the state with a 600-seat auditorium. The facility is on the leading edge of performing arts technology and includes automated controls for lighting and sound, programmable light sequencing and the ability to operate remotely. Energy-efficient lighting, heating and cooling are all major features of the building.
The total construction costs for the projects reviewed in this issue tops $106 million that has been invested in our region. Note that several other commercial projects were completed during the year but owners/developers were not able to provide us with the details of the construction projects.
