David Robson, a local leader in the Maker movement, says the digital multimeter (DMM) is one of the most common items of test equipment used in the electronics industry today. Find out how to use a DMM at July’s Maker Monday on July 13, 7:30pm at the Downtown Bend Library.
While there are many other items of test equipment that are available, the DMM is the most basic of the electronic instruments used by electronic technicians says Robson. During the workshop Robson will give a basic explanation of how the DMM measures voltage, current and resistance and the relationship between the three, known as
OHM s Law.
“The DMM is very handy around the home to test if electrical connections are good and to determine ‘continuity,’ which means if there is an electrical path from one point to another,” he says. “The most frequent use of a DMM is to test batteries to determine if they hold a charge or worn,” says Robson. In addition to mastering the DMM and gaining a better understanding of basic circuitry, participants will leave the workshop with their own DMM.
Robson, long-time electronic hobbyist, has an extensive background in electrical engineering and medical imaging. He moved to Bend in 2012 and has been busy as the organizer of the Bend Arduino Group (http://www.meetup.com/Bend-Arduino-Group/) and co-founder of E::SPACE Labs (www.espacelabs.com). Robson remains excited about electronics, especially the new explosive markets of Internet of Things (IoT).
